NAGC Parent Tip SheetsFamily Passion Projects
Family passion projects are collaborative endeavors that unite families around shared interests, hobbies, or causes. Whether it's gardening, cooking, volunteering, or creative arts, these projects offer opportunities for bonding, learning, and making meaningful contributions together. From planting a community garden to organizing charity events or crafting family art exhibitions, passion projects ignite creativity, strengthen relationships, and foster a sense of shared purpose within the family unit.

Take the Gifted Gripes Challenge!
Note: The 8 Great Gripes of Gifted Learners were created by Judy Galbraith in 1985.
Objective: Engage as a family to explore and understand the unique challenges faced by gifted learners, fostering empathy, communication, and support.
Challenge Format:
-
Create a Gripes Challenge Board:
- Set up a board or space with eight sections, each dedicated to one of the "8 Great Gripes of Gifted Learners."
-
Weekly Challenge Activities:
- Each week, the family tackles one gripe through an interactive activity designed to reflect on and address the concerns of the gifted learner.
-
Activity Ideas for Each Gripe (click on each gripe to access the challenge)
Gripe 1: "No one explaines what being gifted is all about - it's kept a big secret."
Gripe 2: "The stuff we do in school is too easy and it’s boring."
Gripe 3: "Parents, teachers, and friends expect us to be perfect, to ‘do our best’ all the time."
Gripe 4: "Kids often tease us about being smart."
Gripe 5: "Friends who really understand us are few and far between."
Gripe 6: "We feel too different and wish people would accept us for what we are."
Gripe 7: "We feel overwhelmed by the number of things we can do in life."
Gripe 8: "We worry a lot about world problems and feel helpless to do anything about them."
-
Reflection and Discussion:
After each activity, gather to discuss what you learned about the gifted learner's experiences and how the family can continue to support them in facing these challenges.
-
Celebrate Completion:
- Upon completing all eight challenges, celebrate with a special family day, reflecting on the journey and the understanding gained through the activities.
